Ms.Singhania entered the classroom , carrying a stack of books. The noise in the class immediately subsided to silence. Everyone stood up and greeted her receiving a smile back from her.
She settled on the desk, arranging the files and books. There was no specific period right now , so few students were busy completing their incomplete work and some were gossiping.
Ishika sat at the front desk , exactly in front of the class teacher reading an academic book.
"What are you studying, Ishika?" Ms.Singhania asked , gently.
Ishika looked up at her smiling, "Economics," she responded. "Demand and Supply, you are going to teach the chapter today. So i thought I would read it beforehand."
The teacher smiled at her, "That's very smart of you."
Ms.Singhania took out some papers from her teacher book and handed it to her. "These are some notes of previous year students that will help you. Share these with the class too." She said, trying to get her familiar with other students.
"Thank you, Mam!" Ishika replied, grateful.
"Are you getting along with everyone?" Ms.Singhania continued further as she raised her eyebrows at her.
"Yes mam." Ishika replied, short - a little shy to tell her about the awkwardness of new schools and students.
"So, have you made any friends yet?"
Ishika looked down at her book , thinking about Ipshita and Meenakshi for a moment but she remembered they never really asked her to be friends.
"Ishika?" Ms.Singhania broke her trance.
"Kabir," She said suddenly, turning her head to the half open door of the classroom.
Ms Singhania blinked , confused.
"Kabir?"
The door to the classroom opened and Kabir entered whistling, sunglasses on. He then posed raising his one arm above his head and the other rested on his hips.
"Dance,dance everybody
Gettin' hot in the party
Come on,Come on start feeling" He sang loudly.
Ishika and Ms.Singhania shared an amused glance , Kabir pushed his sunglasses with his finger glancing at them. He rolled his body landing straight in front of Ms.Singhania's desk.
Kabir forwarded his right hand ,bowing in a princely manner. She scowled jokingly , putting a book instead. He turns back and plops the book right at Ishika's desk.
Kabir jumped above the desk , settling on the chair dramatically. "Missed me?" He questioned.
Ms.Singhania answered before anyone, "No...though I'm surprised you sat on the front desk willingly."
"Aapki khawaish sarakhon par!" Kabir replied , bowing his head while removing an imaginary cap.
[Your wish is my order!]
She gave him an un-impressed look, diverting her attention to Ishika. "What were you saying earlier?"
"What were you both discussing?" Kabir jumped in the conversation, resting his head on his palm.
"If she has made any friends," Ms.Sighania sighed answering his question.
He nodded his head in understanding, "Well, that's obviously me!" He announced in confidence.
"Overconfidence kills." Ms.Sighania commented , jokingly.
"No mam, he is." Ishika supported him immediately. Kabir smiled smugly, fixing his collar.
"Really? That's good. Maybe you can influence him to study." The teacher said, smiling.
"But...what if I influence her to become like me?" He asked, mischief glinting in his eyes.
"Then god bless us!"
The class laughed along with Kabir who stood up thanking everyone like a politician. Ishika sneakily hit him on his knees making him sit back on the chair.
He gasped loudly , eyes widening in surprise. She smirked lightly ,burying herself back in the book. Kabir massaged his leg while mockingly glaring at her.
"Alright class, take out chapter 2 of the economics book. We will be studying demand today."
The opening of books and notebooks echoed in the class. Kabir glanced around and then at his bag where the book was. He paused , thinking for a while he closed the zip and turned towards Ishika.
"I forgot to bring my book," He muttered in an innocent voice. Ishika tilted her head slightly, looking at the sunglasses perched on his head.
"You don't seem to forget your sunglasses?" She remarked, narrowing her eyes.
"I-"
"We can share the book." Ishika said , sliding the book in the center of the table. Kabir grinned in victory.
"Demand! Like the way i demanded this book from you?" He asked.
Ishika squinted her eyes at him , "No, that's not called demand!" She sighed explaining the meaning of the demand.
"So...like what if people stop demanding anything?" Kabir questioned, frowning as if the concept of demand isn't right.
"That's not possible! People have infinite needs so the demand will always be there." Ishika explained to him. Her eyes bouncing between the teacher and him.
Kabir nodded in agreement, and started reading the lines of the chapter. His brows furrowed every two minutes, he glanced up to see Ishika busy in answering the teacher.
"If price increases then demand also increases," He read the lines written in the book bringing in the attention of Ishika. "Then why don't we increase the price of everything?"
Ishika stared at him, her mind darting between whether to hit him for his stupidity or explain him. She took a deep breath , "Then people won't buy the product!"
"But it says here," Kabir argued , pointing towards the book.
"Yes, because that's a different type of goods." Ishika answered, patiently.
He scowled , "This is very confusing!". Kabir huffed in annoyance , resting his head on the table.
Ishika sighed, taking out her self - curated notes and passed it to him. He gazed at her in confusion, tilting his head in a question.
"What are these?" Kabir asked , examining the papers with sticky notes stuck to it.
"Adoption papers." She deadpanned.
"Huh? Whose?" He started flipping the pages searching for the 'person'.
Ishika sighed, pinching her nose bridge. "Stupid! It's economics notes. There's clearly a heading of it too!" She cried in irritation, hitting him with her book.
"Ow ow!" Kabir winced , shielding himself from her attack. "Why are you hitting me today?"
"What happened?" Ms.Singhania asked , turning around after hearing Kabir's voice.
"Nothing mam, we were just discussing some topics." Ishika replied, without missing a beat.
Ms.Singhania nodded , going back to teaching her lessons. Kabir pouted slightly, shifting away from her a little.
Ishika narrowed her eyes at him , "You started it!" She accused , her lips forming a thin line.
"I was just asking some doubts!" He gasped , absolutely not gasping.
The rest of the class , Kabir kept asking her questions-dumb questions. Ishika was irritated and entertained by his stupid questions though she answered all of them.
The bell for the next class rang, making all the students of the class sigh in relief. The teacher, Ms.Singhania, raised her eyes hearing the collective sigh from the class.
"Do I teach this boring?" She crossed her arms across her chest in a questioning manner.
"No mam, economics is boring!" Rohan answered, receiving affirmative nods from the whole class.
"It's a little boring but also the easiest if you pay attention." She explained, a few students groaned reluctantly agreeing with her.
Ms.Singhania left for her next class after giving everyone homework. Ishika started packing her things clearing the space for the next subject.
"I have a doubt!" Kabir announced, holding the book towards her.
"It's time for the next class!" Ishika replied, glancing at the door expecting the next teacher to walk in anytime.
"But I have doubts!" He fake cried.
Ishika sighed seeing his act, "Text me! I will explain it there." She replied giving him an alternative.
Kabir nodded , smiling inside, "Yeah, I will send you a brain signal...You know telepathy."
She frowned not understanding what he meant, "Why would you send me telepathy?"
"Do I have your number?" He questioned, raising his eyebrow.
Ishika sighed, "You could have just asked normally?" She complained , writing her number on the piece of chit and passing it to him.
"I don't like to do ordinary things!" Kabir winked , folding the paper and keeping it safely between the papers.
Ishika, Meenakshi and Ipshita were roaming around the school after submitting their work. It was a free period for class 11th because few of the teachers went for board checking.
"Let's go to the ground, everyone is there." Meenakshi quipped , holding Ipshita's hand to convince her.
"Ok-ok! Ishika?" Ipshita asked , turning towards her.
Ishika paused thinking for a while, "You go...i will come soon." She smiled. Ipshita nodded and walked away with Meenakshi.
Ishika walked down the corridor, exploring the school in silence. She walked in curiosity, peeking inside the class she hadn't visited yet.
She opened the door to the classroom at the far corner of the hallway with no sign. The room was filled with old chairs, tables and random things - all collecting dust.
Click
Ishika heard a sound somewhere deeper in the room, she turned towards it , walking a little. Someone was crouching in front of the window , she hesitantly placed her hand on the person's shoulder lightly.
"AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"
"AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!"
Both Ishika and the person screamed loudly, in panic they both hit the tables kept at the side.
The person was none other than Kabir, who looked at Ishika shielding herself with her arms.
He frowned , tilting his head, "Tum kyu Darr rahi ho?" He asked.
[Why are you scared?]
Ishika peaked from behind her arms, her eyes squinting against the direct sunlight falling on her.
"Tum ho kya?" She sighed in relief, removing her arms from her face. "You shouted first!" She blamed.
[It's you?]
Kabir gasped, "Excuse me? Ab koi mujhe ekdum se touch krega toh me daru bhi na?" He questioned, keeping his hands on his hips.
[Excuse me? If someone touches me suddenly, won't i feel surprised?]
"What are you doing here alone?" Ishika asked, coughing a little due to the dust in the room.
"I-" He hesitated , looking around for some excuse. He noticed a mouse running away from the door, "Me chuho ko company de rha tha!"
"Kya?" She said, confused with his excuse.
"I was giving company to the mouse!" Kabir repeated his previous line.
"Mujhe hindi samajh me aati hai!" Ishika rolled her eyes , huffing as she sat down at the table after cleaning the dust.
[I understand Hindi!]
"Who knows!" He shrugged casually, copying her ,he also sat on the table on his side.
"So...why are you here alone? Don't you have any friends?" Ishika asked, quietly, afraid to hurt his feelings somehow.
Kabir looked up at her , "You're my friend."
She went quiet for a minute , "I meant you must have friends before me too?"
Kabir nodded, "Yeah, he went abroad for his further studies."
"Oh...," Ishika's eyes travelled to the thing he was holding all this time.
A Camera
"What's that?" She pointed her finger at the black camera he was holding.
Kabir's eyes widened, he quickly hid it behind his back. "Nothing," He said, quickly.
"Kabir is that a camera?" Ishika asked , squinting her eyes trying to look behind his back.
"Yes...i mean no!" He blabbered, gulping.
"It's not allowed in school!" She whispered, glancing at the half opened door.
Kabir sighed , knowing the cat is out of the bag. He brought the camera forward, twisting it in his hands.
"Who cares about the rules?" He shrugged, smirking a little.
Ishika frowned , "That's not good!" she shook her head dismissively.
"We are friends, right?" Ishika nodded confused. "Then let's keep a secret?" He asked, raising his eyebrow.
She sighed, her disciplined instinct leaning towards telling the authority while the friendship part told her to keep the secret.
"Show me!" Ishika asked , curiously.
"What?" Kabir questioned, tilting his head.
"Your birth certificate," She deadpanned. "The photos, stupid!" she said, after he didn't understand.
"...oh!" He nodded. "No!"
"What? Why?" Ishika raised her eyebrows at him.
Kabir shrugged, pocketing the camera and started looking outside the window where other students were visible playing.
"Ok! I'm going to tell the teacher." She provoked him , getting up.
His eyes widened, and he quickly blocked her way. "How about I click a picture of you and you can see it?" He prompted.
Ishika thought for a while, then nodded with a smile. She sat back on the table waiting for him to click a photo.
Kabir sighed , gesturing her with the right angles. "Move towards the right a little, let the sunlight fall on your eyes."
Ishika followed his instructions and moved right. Now, the sunrays fell at the right angle making her hazel eyes bright with little gold sparkles.
Click
Ishika jumped off the table, quickly moving towards him. She leaned in to look at the picture.
She let out an audible gasp, "Wow!" she exclaimed, covering her mouth with her hand.
"I know...I know!" He smirked, flickering his hair with the back of his hand.
"Send me this photo!" Ishika said, excitedly still not over how good the photo turned out.
"Yeah! I will send you the brain signal!" Kabir joked , laughing receiving a glare from her.
